Game Design History

ORIGINAL VERSION

I first began working on this game in 2016 when the company I worked for was acquired by another company. Most of us kept our jobs (thankfully) it got me thinking of game mechanic where a player instead of being eliminated became a subsidiary of another player or as I called it "in an unequal alliance."

Inspired by my real life circumstances I began working on a game with this mechanic as the central theme. Of course players would be corporations and I had the idea of them competing to land on and claim a planet for its resources. I made my prototype board, cards pieces, etc. and started playtesting with friends, family, total strangers ( anyone who would play) so I could balance it out.

The I walked into my local game store and saw Terraforming Mars on the shelf. Someone had beaten me to it. I was so dejected that I shelved the whole project and focused on developing my other games for the next 2 years.

Later my wife convinced me to pick it back up again. I begrudgingly played Terraforming Mars at a friends house and to my relief, it was nothing like my game. So I jumped back with renewed interest. Scott Ungar graphic designer extraordinaire came up with these fantastic card designs using stock free-use photographs that he photoshopped to make them fit the sci-fi theme.

I took the result to Gen Con and playtested it there. and got lots of positive feedback as well as some great suggestions and improvements.

Launch Land Expand was the original working title but later it would become the subtitle, as I plan on creating more Launch Land Expand games
